The Carbon Contract ensures that your organization achieves carbon neutrality and beyond by addressing the part of your carbon footprint that cannot be reduced through internal activities alone. Our aim is to offer certified Swedish carbon credits from biochar to businesses in need of carbon offsetting solutions along with a communication toolkit for your marketing. All biochar carbon credits presented by The Carbon Contract are certified, documented and tracked by a blockchain system in accordance with the industry’s latest standards and guidelines, ensuring sustainability and transparency.
The Carbon Contract started with the endorsement of our ambassador and first official Carbon Contract customer, ElinderSten. Their feedback and support has been a key driver in developing our biochar carbon credit concept. The Carbon Contract (“Kolkontraktet”) is owned by the Swedish company Biokolprodukter Global AB, who as a biochar soil developer contribute in realising the biochar carbon credits to make them available to you. A fundamental aspect of our mission is to ensure full transparency and quality through certification and traceability of our biochar producers. This support is provided in collaboration with the biochar consultancy firm EcoTopic.
Each of the forces behind The Carbon Contract are focusing on what they do best to create something great together. So keep focusing on what you do best and let The Carbon Contract help you meet your climate goals today!

Biochar is produced by carbonizing sustainably sourced biomass, stabilizing carbon atoms acquired through photosynthesis and thereby reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Recognized by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2018 for its resistance to degradation, biochar is considered a technology for negative emissions. Biochar serves as a method for creating carbon sinks (biochar carbon removals, BCR, or biochar carbon credits) and climate benefits while it can also potentially adress local waste management, offer negative carbon energy and soil solutions. Commonly reported soil improvement benefits include enhanced water and nutrient retention, contributing to increased yields and soil resilience in the face of climate change. What's not to like?!

Biochar carbon removal (BCR) is a readily available carbon offsetting tool and is recognized as a crucial industrial carbon removal technology. Calculation methodologies such as Global Biochar C-sink, EBC C-sink, Puro Earth and Verra are commonly used to assess the carbon sink potential of biochar. The biochar producers at The Carbon Contract are certified according to EBC C-sink or Global Biochar C-sink, which define C-sink potential as the carbon content of biochar minus the carbon emissions from its production, encompassing the entire carbon footprint from production to delivery.

The European Biochar Certificate (EBC) entails a thorough assessment of the entire biochar production process, guaranteeing the sustainability of biomass sourcing and the quality of pyrolysis. Adhering to EBC guidelines for biochar and carbon credits certification involves multiple stages of monitoring and reporting. Renewal occurs annually, requiring the submission of new biochar samples for analysis at an EBC-accredited laboratory.
The Global Biochar C-sink and EBC C-sink calculates the biochar’s carbon sink immediately after production, offering a snapshot of its potential carbon sequestration. To fully assess biochar’s climate impact, emissions from post-production handling must also be considered, along with its degradation upon soil application. This comprehensive approach ensures an accurate calculation of its climate impact, with Carbonfuture playing a crucial role.

Carbonfuture provides a blockchain-based digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) system for the biochar, monitoring its journey from production to end application. This system forms the basis for calculating emissions from post-production handling.
By coupling the Global Biochar C-sink and EBC C-sink certifications with Carbonfuture's tracking system, the final application of biochar undergoes rigorous verification, ensuring the integrity of the carbon sink. Opting for local biochar use enhances the carbon sink, mitigating the environmental impact of long-distance transportation.

The Carbon Contract is where companies and organisations can reach their climate targets with certified Swedish biochar carbon credits.
The biochar industry is still in its infancy, and in certain sectors, such as Swedish agriculture, the cost of biochar remains prohibitive for widespread adoption. However, by engaging in Swedish biochar carbon removals trading through The Carbon Contract, it becomes feasible to expand biochar applications. Biochar carbon removals serves as a catalyst for scaling up biochar production and use, strengthening efforts toward climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The Carbon Contract helps you achieve your climate goals while providing communication materials to showcase your company’s climate and environmental initiatives.
Contracts are ordinarily delivered to you within 5 business days from accepted quote. Read more about our beautiful Sink Stories and contact us to start your carbon removal journey.

The biochar carbon removals are certified, documented, and calculated according to the Global Biochar C-sink which is regulated by ICROA. The entire biochar production process – from biomass to technology and final biochar – is certified according to the European Biochar Certificate.

To ensure traceability and documentation of our biochar carbon removals, the biochar is tracked through a blockchain-based digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) system provided by Carbonfuture. This ensures accurate calculation and guarantees secure, long-term carbon storage.
