About us
With biochar as our chosen tool, we move from promise to practice.

Passion and geekery
We share a common set of values: what we do should contribute to real solutions for the climate challenge. There are many paths to get there, but ours became biochar.
Biochar offers everything we look for in our work – it challenges us, helps us grow, keeps our curiosity alive, and allows us to have fun with others who share the same passion. It’s a blend of technology and hands-on practice, of science and everyday life, which makes it almost impossible to get bored.
Every day, we meet pioneers and innovators who produce or use biochar. Through The Carbon Contract, we want to invite more people to join in – to help drive the development of the biochar industry and our society’s journey toward reduced climate impact by investing in carbon sinks.

Credibility – the foundation of climate action that matters
A carbon sink is not all that complicated in itself – at its core, it’s about binding carbon so that it doesn’t turn into atmospheric CO₂ for a long time. The challenge arises when we need to prove that it really exists, that it will last, and that it’s as large as we claim.
To us, credibility is incredibly important – not just from a business standpoint but as a fundamental personal value. In The Carbon Contract, we create carbon sinks that are transparent, traceable, and verified. We combine established certifications with blockchain technology and clear documentation to ensure the highest possible reliability. At the same time, we stay continuously updated on the rapidly evolving regulations and standards within the climate and carbon sink sectors.
It is our responsibility to ensure that climate compensation doesn’t just sound good – it actually is good.

Biochar from three perspectives
Our journey with biochar began in 2012 when we founded the consultancy Ecotopic. Through curiosity, networking, and – honestly – a bit of luck, we’ve since had the opportunity to take part in a wide range of biochar projects around the world. We’ve helped develop regulations, standards, and industry networks, and learned an incredible amount along the way. This has given us a strong systems perspective – understanding how biochar works in practice, but also how it can be scaled and quality-assured in a credible way.
In 2018, we approached biochar from a new angle by starting Biokolprodukter – a company that develops and sells tailor-made biochar for urban soils, filtration solutions, and lightly contaminated land. Here, we became users, not just advisors – an experience that has proven invaluable. Thanks to this role as biochar users, we can now help unlock some of the carbon sinks that we’re able to offer through the Carbon Contract in 2025. These carbon sinks are rooted in a real-world context we’ve helped build – from multiple angles.

Swedish beginnings with Indian visions
We believe climate compensation has rightly faced criticism – often because of difficult-to-monitor and poorly quality-assured carbon sink projects far removed from everyday life. We believe that climate benefits can and should be created globally – but also that they must feel real, trustworthy, and close.
That’s why we’re starting here at home. Our carbon sinks are Swedish – produced by Swedish biochar producers, used in Swedish soils, and administered by a Swedish company. This makes the climate compensation tangible and relatable. It can be followed up on, and even visited.

At the same time, we don’t want to turn a blind eye to the rest of the world. Through our own projects in partnership with organizations in India, we’ve seen the tremendous difference biochar can make – especially in dry and depleted soils. There, the effects go beyond climate benefits, contributing to improved yields, water retention, and living conditions.
That’s why our ambition is to also include Indian carbon sinks in the Carbon Contract – with biochar that is produced and used locally in India, but with the same transparency, follow-up, and quality control as our Swedish projects. All still administered by us here in Sweden.

About The Carbon Contract

About Biochar Carbon Removal

Certified & tracked

The biochar carbon removals are certified, documented, and calculated according to the Global Biochar C-sink which is regulated by ICROA. The entire biochar production process – from biomass to technology and final biochar – is certified according to the European Biochar Certificate.

To ensure traceability and documentation of our biochar carbon removals, the biochar is tracked through a blockchain-based digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) system provided by Carbonfuture. This ensures accurate calculation and guarantees secure, long-term carbon storage.
