Godegården

In the open countryside of northern Västergötland, we find the community of Järpås and the Godegården farm. Godegården is not just a farm, it is a vision of how food production can be run in symbiosis with nature. Godegården works according to an ecological and regenerative approach where the focus is on the health of the soil in order to produce nutritious food long term.

Resource management in a closed cycle with biochar

Since 2023, Godegården has been producing biochar from its own and locally collected waste materials, and the heat generated from the process is used to heat both its own farm and nearby buildings through a local heating network. Some of the biochar produced is used within Godegården, but most of it is sold to a wide variety of applications. Godegården's biochar is spread on agricultural land, used as a feed supplement and included in the turf at Sweden's national football stadium, Strawberry Arena.

A holistic approach to resilient agriculture

Godegården has a wide range of agricultural activities, including egg production, sheep farming, beekeeping, seed cleaning and cultivation, in addition to biochar production, and the various parts complement each other. Godegården's beekeeping, which has been KRAV-certified since 2015, is combined with the cultivation of sunflowers. The sheep not only provide meat and skins, but also play an important role in limiting weed growth and fertilising the soil. Thanks to the view of agriculture as a way of building stronger soil, Godegården's land is more resistant to both drought and heavy rain. With a changing climate and increasingly severe weather fluctuations, resilience is becoming increasingly important.

The development of the business never stops. New attempts to strengthen the soil and the farm are constantly underway, and the integration of biochar is a good example of this. The potential for using biochar in the agricultural sector is enormous, but it requires pioneers to spread knowledge and inspire others to start trying it out. By purchasing certified carbon credits from Godegården, you are helping to scale up biochar through a network of decentralised, agriculture-based ecosystems and create a truly vibrant countryside.
